Summer School »Antimicrobial Stewardship: Managing Antibiotic Resistance« at UP FVZ (May 2026) offers nursing and health science students an in-depth understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and stewardship (AMS). The program focuses on rational antibiotic use, the prevention of healthcare-associated infections, epidemiological surveillance, and modern diagnostic techniques. It develops clinical decision-making, research skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration within a One Health approach.

Learning objectives:

  • Is aware of the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at global, national, and local levels.
  • Understands the “One Health” concept and the impact of antibiotic use across human, animal, plant, and environmental sectors.
  • Understands the relationship between antimicrobial use and the potential for resistance development for individual antimicrobial classes and drugs.
  • Recognizes the importance of appropriate antimicrobial prescribing for quality of care and patient safety.
  • Understands the role of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) as a key activity in controlling AMR and ensuring the quality and safety of antimicrobial treatment for individual patients, and appreciates the cost-effectiveness of AMS.
  • Knows how to advocate for AMS in their workplace, to other healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Is familiar with the scientific evidence supporting Antibiotic Stewardship programs.
