Quality

UP Faculty of Health Sciences (UP FVZ) monitors quality with regular Annual Work Programmes, Annual Reports, Self-Evaluation Reports and Field Analyses. The Annual Work Programmes, Financing Plans and Annual Reports test whether the set goals have been achieved and whether the members work successfully and efficiently, thus also ensuring quality is continuously improving. The Self-Evaluation Report, however, is the tool that directly ensures that constant increase of quality. It provides an assessment of the situation and a critical analysis, an analysis of advantages and disadvantages, and proposals to eliminate drawbacks and improve quality. The basic purpose of the Self-Evaluation Report is thus to monitor the situation and improve the activities of the quality assurance system at UP FVZ in all its domains or within the scope of the key and support processes.

Athlete-Friendly Education Certificate

The Olympic Committee of Slovenia – Association of Sports Federations (OKS-ZŠZ) has awarded the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Primorska (UP FVZ) recognition for its well-developed approach to supporting dual careers and providing athlete-friendly education.

Elite athletes dedicate most of their time and energy to training and competitions and are therefore often absent from the educational process at all levels of study. This can affect their academic performance and educational attainment, which may subsequently create challenges when building a career after the end of their sporting career. Acquiring relevant competencies and educational qualifications during an athletic career is therefore an important factor in achieving long-term professional success. This can only be achieved through appropriate accommodations and an understanding of the specific requirements associated with pursuing a dual career. For this reason, the Olympic Committee of Slovenia – Association of Sports Federations (OKS-ZŠZ) awards the “Athlete-Friendly Education” certificate, which promotes activities supporting athletes’ dual careers.

The purpose of the certificate is to recognize educational environments and institutions that provide adapted study conditions for athletes. It serves as a source of information for athletes when choosing an educational institution that offers favourable conditions for combining sport and education, while also providing added value to educational institutions through increased visibility, a comparative advantage, and eligibility criteria for public funding intended to support athletes and their dual careers. The Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Primorska also benefits from obtaining this certificate.

In 2025, the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Primorska was awarded the “Athlete-Friendly Education” certificate, demonstrating its commitment to supporting dual careers and providing an educational environment tailored to the needs of athletes. The recognition is granted by the Olympic Committee of Slovenia – Association of Sports Federations (OKS-ZŠZ).

At the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Primorska (UP FVZ), we support students who successfully pursue both their academic studies and their sporting careers. Students who hold an official athlete or coach status may apply for the status of student athlete or student coach, which enables them to benefit from adjustments to their study obligations and facilitates the balancing of academic and sporting commitments.

Students may obtain this status by submitting an application together with the required supporting documentation, in accordance with the UP Rules on Special Student Statuses. The Rules and the application form are publicly available on the Faculty’s website.

Students holding this status are entitled to various forms of support provided by the Faculty, which are implemented:

– in accordance with the UP Rules on Special Student Statuses; and
– on the basis of individual arrangements with lecturers, tailored to the student’s sporting commitments.

In all cases, the Faculty takes into account the requirements of the professional profile and the prescribed scope of theoretical and practical education. Within the first-cycle professional study programme in Nursing, clinical training constitutes a mandatory component of the curriculum and is therefore not subject to individual adjustments.

To provide additional support, UP FVZ has established a tutoring system.

The system includes:

  • faculty tutors, among whom coordinators for student athletes and student coaches are appointed; and
  • student tutors, who assist students with their studies and the organisation of their academic obligations.

More information about tutoring is available in Slovenian language at the LINK.

NEW

In the 2025/2026 academic year, undergraduate students may choose the elective course Self Health Care. The Rules are available in Slovenian language at the LINK.

POSSIBLE STUDY ADJUSTMENTS

UP FVZ implements a range of measures for students with athlete/coach status, with some activities being carried out on the basis of:

  • The UP Regulations on Special Student Statuses
  • Individual agreements with professors

Adaptations of study obligations in accordance with Article 18 of the Regulations on Special Student Statuses at the University of Primorska mean that students with officially recognized athlete or coach status are entitled to:

  • a reduction in mandatory attendance requirements for study activities, where permitted by the accredited study programme and agreed upon with the course coordinator, but not below 30% of the prescribed attendance;
  • enrolment in a higher year of study or the final-year internship (absolvent status) if they have completed at least 70% of the requirements prescribed for enrolment in the higher year;
  • taking examinations outside the regular examination periods, subject to prior agreement with the course coordinator;
  • support from a student tutor and a faculty tutor.

UP FVZ, in agreement with the course coordinator, provides additional accommodations for students with athlete or coach status to help them balance their academic and sporting commitments:

  • Dedicated tutor support – students with athlete/coach status are offered regular meetings with a tutor, faculty tutor, or sports coordinator, who assists them in organizing their learning process and planning their study obligations.
  • Peer tutoring support – students may receive additional support from a student tutor from the same study programme, who helps them understand course content, prepare for examinations, and obtain notes and other study materials.
  • Alternative methods of completing certain study requirements may be agreed upon with the course coordinator if they are better suited to the student’s sporting commitments.
  • When possible, practical classes and other study activities may be rescheduled or completed outside the regular timetable in a way that accommodates sporting obligations.
  • Extended deadlines may be granted for the submission of assignments and seminar papers required within the study programme.
  • Individual consultations with lecturers may be arranged outside the regularly scheduled consultation hours.
  • For elective courses in the field of sport, students with athlete/coach status may have learning outcomes recognized in accordance with the UP FVZ Rules on the Recognition of Formally and Informally Acquired Knowledge and Skills.
