Conran Joseph

Professor Conran Joseph is Head of the Division of Physiotherapy at Stellenbosch University and a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher. He holds a PhD in Medical Sciences from Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) and has over a decade of academic and research leadership in rehabilitation science.

His research focuses on neurological rehabilitation, disability and outcomes assessment, injury epidemiology, and physiotherapy education, with an emerging emphasis on self-management support to enhance person-centred rehabilitation outcomes. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, with over 1,500 citations, and has secured over R15 million in research funding as principal or co-investigator. His work aligns strongly with global health priorities, particularly Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Health) and 17 (Partnerships).

Professor Joseph has supervised numerous postgraduate students and currently leads a growing research team, including postdoctoral fellows. He has received several prestigious awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship (2024–2025), the South African Medical Research Council Scientific Merit Award (Bronze, 2025), and a Best Regional Platform Presentation award at the World Physiotherapy Congress (Tokyo, Japan 2025).

In addition to his academic leadership, he serves on multiple editorial boards and contributes to international collaborative research initiatives in rehabilitation and public health.
