A brief description of the area
Major changes in the health care system and in the field of nursing practise require equally major changes in nursing education and beyond. The fundamental goals of nursing education remain the same: to prepare nurses to meet the patients’ needs, to act as leaders, and to advance the science of nursing with a focus on providing safe, high-quality care. However, nursing education today must be designed to be effective, attractive to the next generation of nurses, and most importantly, promote critical thinking and responsibility for one’s work. Today’s nursing education should incorporate innovative and flexible forms of teaching and learning using digital technology. The latter can be used to enhance students’ key competencies as well as their general competencies (e.g., the ability to plan and solve problems, work independently, think analytically, be creative, etc.). Above all, it is of utmost importance to increase the level of competence of teachers working in nursing education, both in preparing lessons with digital technology and in applying other didactic methods and innovative work with students.
A brief description of major research
Just as important as innovative forms of teaching and learning and the use of digital technology in nursing education that support education, is the design of educational programmes that use digital technology. There are many approaches, models, and frameworks for designing educational programmes. These approaches support and guide educational programme designers through the process of analysing, planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating learning processes. Projects such as Development of a digital education standard in higher education for ensuring equity and accessibility in digital education (ARRS Project), e-Education and Learning: Video Initiatives in Digital Education and Module-Based Learning (ERASMUS +), Digital Education Initiatives and Timely Solutions (ERASMUS +), Innovating with Technology to Knowledge (National Project), make important contributions to research in nursing education.
