A brief description of the area
Professionalisation is an important social dimension of work and part of the value system of any society. For many years, nursing has been recognised as a partially professionalised profession for a number of reasons. However, through the process of professionalisation, nursing has also developed educational standards and codes of ethics, increased social capital and self-regulation within the profession, a professional identity and evidence-based practice. The aim of professionalising nursing is to provide high quality, safe and effective care. Achieving this goal requires systematic research, the development of critical thinking and evidence-based decision making. Evidence-based practice requires new knowledge, justification of current practice, responsiveness to societal changes and needs, and the development of nursing as a socially responsible scientific discipline.
A brief description of major research
A comprehensive EUPRON survey in 2018 explored the role of nurses in various areas of pharmaceutical care: monitoring of the side effects and therapeutic effects of medicines, prescribing medicines and providing patient education and information on medicines. The DeMoPhaC study, a follow-up to EUPRON, aims to develop and validate interprofessional collaboration of nurses in pharmaceutical care in Europe. A bilateral project “Implementation of nurse professional competence scale in nursing profession in Croatia and Slovenia is also being carried out at the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka together with the University of Primorska Faculty of Health Studies. We are also implementing a 9-year project entitled EQUANU: Equality in social and professional recognition of nurses, which examines the social and professional recognition of nurses. In the GDI-UP project, we are trying to identify themes that are particularly relevant for the lifelong learning of nurses.
