A brief description of the area
Ergonomics deals with understanding the interaction between humans and other elements of the environment. It applies theoretical knowledge, data and methods to planning of the optimization of human wellbeing in a given environment. Ergonomically sound working and living environment exhibits positive effects on health and satisfaction of individuals and groups. The field of physical ergonomics studies individual’s anatomical, anthropometric, physiological and biomechanical characteristics related to body position and activity during work. In order to be ergonomically efficient, it is not sufficient to adapt the environment to the human, but also to adapt the human to the environment and to increase his/her physical abilities.
A brief description of major research
Exploring the effect of implementing ergonomic interventions in working environments, with the purpose of eliciting meaningful and measurable effects on selected variables and predictors of health (e.g. daily physical/sports activity levels).
Research on designing suitable ergonomic interventions in the working environment and implementing these interventions on a broad number of individuals.
Research in the field of development of assistive tools (exoskeletons) for unloading of the spine during load lifting and static postures. The purpose of these studies is to contribute to reduction in prevalence of low back pain and more successful occupational reintegration.
Studies designed to recognize the underlying mechanisms of (over)load to musculoskeletal system, especially during forward bending, load pushing/pulling and load lifting, with the purpose of reducing the load and associated risk of injury arising from these activities.
Development of active workstations with the aim to increase the level of physical activity of the employees during sitting.
Research in the field of ergonomic optimization of the interaction between individual and different tools and accessories, with the purpose of increasing work efficiency and reduce detrimental effects on health.
Ergonomic design of furniture with the aim to ensure a more efficient and healthier life.
