Summary of research topic and field

A reduction in functional capabilities of humans as a result of ageing is one of the most important topics of research in the area of public health. One of the entities among functional capabilities is also endurance. Endurance as such has not received a lot of research attention from the ageing standpoint. The scope of this project will be to investigate whether the concept of critical power/speed can be used as a test for assessing health status of individuals not only in athletes but also in general population. In addition to this, the aim is to explore the notion that it is important to encourage people to work on preserving a relatively high critical power/speed throughout their lifespans.

Students will be using investigative techniques related to exercise physiology (i.e., indirect calorimetry, use of cycling ergometers, blood analysis).
