Description

According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, 2023), language teaching develops reception/comprehension of oral and audiovisual material and reading comprehension; production (oral and written expression); interaction (oral, written, online); and mediation (summarising, translating and transforming information). In class, we develop intercultural communication skills and the importance of multilingualism, and introduce advanced digital technologies.

Thematic units:
1. IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Content: Greeting and introducing oneself and others; asking and answering questions; providing and requesting personal information; reading and completing medical forms and patient records; scheduling medical appointments and planning.

Grammar: Spelling and pronunciation; present tense of regular verbs and the verbs essere and avere; personal pronouns; definite articles (singular and plural); polite forms of address; nouns (singular and plural).

Vocabulary: Parts of the body; symptoms; hospital organisation; administrative terminology; healthcare professions; days of the week; parts of the day; telling the time; months; dates; telephone phrases.

2. HOSPITAL ORGANISATION
Content: The hospital: specialists and departments; areas for the disposal of medical waste; emergency medical equipment trolley; notices and announcements; describing one’s hospital; asking for and giving directions within a general hospital; healthcare professions and institutions (work environments); first work experiences.

Grammar: Stare + gerund; present tense of irregular verbs; informal vs. formal address (tu / Lei); nouns (endings in -e and -i: singular and plural); numerals.

Vocabulary: Healthcare professions and institutions; different areas of a general hospital and hospital departments.

3. MEDICAL HISTORY (ANAMNESIS)
Content: The human body, talking to a patient; signs and symptoms, pain, allergies; insomnia; describing past events and states; medical history records (reading and completing).

Grammar: Stressed and unstressed personal pronouns; the present perfect (passato prossimo).

Vocabulary: Useful expressions for taking a medical history.

4. IN THE PATIENT’S ROOM
Content: The hospital room and activities taking place there; patient hygiene; beds and rooms; feelings and states of well-being; reminders; giving and requesting information by telephone.

Grammar: Demonstrative pronouns this and that (questo and quello); adverbs; the infinitive and the polite imperative for giving instructions.

Vocabulary: Useful verbs for working with patients.
